Death and Burial in Classical Greece

This page from the Metropolitan Museum of Art web site provides a nice summary of burial practices in ancient and classical Greece, though it leaves out one piece of information that may be crucial to our understanding of Antigone. On finding a corpse, it was customary to sprinkle dirt on it in lieu of the traditional funeral services.
